Quick answer

How much does a custom website cost?

Most web design projects reviewed on Clutch cost under $10,000, and US agencies typically bill $100 to $149 an hour. The price depends on page count, custom features, integrations and who writes the content. Budget separately for yearly running costs: domain, hosting, business email and maintenance.

How Much Does a Custom Website Cost in 2026

Ask five agencies what a website costs and you will get five answers, often thousands of dollars apart. That is not because pricing is random. It is because each quote is built on a different idea of what the site needs to do.

This guide breaks the price down into the parts you can control. It covers the market numbers, the scope items that move a quote, the yearly costs after launch, and how we quote projects in our custom web design service. We build sites for small and growing businesses every month, so the examples come from real projects.

What the market data says

The most useful public data comes from Clutch, which collects pricing from verified client reviews. Its 2026 web design pricing guide reports that:

  • Web design agencies typically charge from $2,000 to $100,000, depending on the size and complexity of the project.
  • Most web design projects reviewed on Clutch cost less than $10,000.
  • Agencies in the United States most often charge $100 to $149 per hour.
  • Agencies that build on website builders such as WordPress, Wix or Squarespace charge around $25 to $49 per hour.
  • The average project in its data costs about $38,100, and most projects last about 7 months.

That average is pulled up by large builds. For a typical small business site, the "under $10,000" figure is the better guide. The hourly rates matter too, because a quote is mostly an estimate of hours.

What drives the price of a custom website

When we scope a site, the same few items decide most of the quote.

  • Unique page layouts, not page count. A 30-page site built from 3 layouts can cost less than a 10-page site where every page is different. Service and location pages that share a template are cheap to add once the template exists.
  • Custom features. Quote forms, booking, calculators, customer accounts and search each add design, development and testing time.
  • Integrations. Sending leads to a CRM, syncing a booking tool or pulling live data from another system means building and testing a connection to someone else's software.
  • Content. Writing the copy and producing real photos is often the slowest part of a project. If you supply both, the price drops. If the agency writes them, expect it in the quote.
  • Migration and SEO. Replacing an existing site means mapping every old URL to a new one. Google says permanent redirects do not cause a loss in PageRank, but rankings can still move for a few weeks or more while it recrawls the site, according to its site move guide.
  • Revision rounds and deadlines. More rounds of design changes, or a launch date that forces the team to work in parallel, both add hours.

Running costs after launch

The build is a one-time cost. A website also has yearly costs that many quotes leave out, so ask about each one before you sign.

Domain nameThe registry fee, renewed every yearCloudflare sells domains at cost with no markup. Builder plans often include the first year free, then renew at the standard rate.
HostingIncluded in builder plans; Vercel Pro is $20 a month per developer seatVercel also has a free Hobby tier, which it describes as a starting place for personal projects.
Business emailGoogle Workspace Business Starter lists at $7 per user per monthPromotional prices for new customers are lower for the first year.
MaintenanceOur plans cost $50, $100 or $150 a month by site sizeCovers updates, daily backups, security monitoring and speed checks.

Prices above come from each provider's own pricing page in October 2026: Squarespace, Vercel, Google Workspace and Cloudflare Registrar. Check them again before you budget, because plans change often.

How we price a custom website at JCerme

We do not publish a single price for custom sites, because the scope items above vary too much from one business to the next. Instead, every build starts with a short scoping call and ends with a fixed written quote. The number does not change unless the scope does.

Most projects fall into one of three types:

  • Marketing Site. Up to 5 designed pages, lead forms with spam protection, on-page SEO and analytics. It launches in 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Growth Site. 10 to 25 pages with service or location templates, a content management system your team can edit, schema markup and conversion tracking. It launches in 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Custom Build. Anything with accounts, dashboards, payments or integrations. It is scoped per project.

Two real examples show how scope moves the price. The sites we built for garage door companies share a structure: a page per service, a quote request flow and tap-to-call buttons. Carlos Garage Door also needed a booking system so customers can pick a time without calling, which added a feature to design, build and test. The site for Perla Recruiting Agency, a household staffing firm, has 25 custom-designed pages in an editorial style, which puts it at the Growth Site scale.

Every build includes mobile-first design and code you own. You can see the full scope of each type on our custom web design page.

Builder, template or custom: how to decide

A builder plan is a reasonable choice if you need a handful of pages, you will update them yourself and you do not compete hard on search. It is also the cheapest way to test a new business idea.

A custom site pays off when the website has to win work: when you compete with other local businesses on Google, when leads need to reach your CRM automatically, or when customers book, pay or log in. It also pays off when speed matters, since a site built for your exact pages carries less code than a general-purpose theme.

If you are deciding between platforms, our comparison of Next.js and WordPress for business websites explains when each one fits. And because the build is only part of the cost, read what website maintenance includes before you set a budget.

Red flags in a website quote

  • No written scope. A price without a list of pages, features and integrations cannot be compared or enforced.
  • Unclear ownership. You should own the domain, the code and the hosting account, or at least have full access to them.
  • "Unlimited revisions." It sounds generous, but it usually means the scope is undefined and the timeline will slip.
  • No redirect plan for a redesign. If the old site ranks, every old URL needs a permanent redirect to its new page.
  • Running costs left out. Ask who pays for hosting, email and maintenance after launch, and how much.

How to get an accurate quote

The more of these you can share up front, the closer the first quote will be to the final price:

  1. A list of the pages you need, and which ones share the same layout.
  2. Two or three websites you like, and what you like about each.
  3. Every feature you need, such as quotes, booking or payments.
  4. The tools the site must connect to, such as your CRM or booking software.
  5. Whether your copy and photos are ready, or need to be created.
  6. Your launch date and your budget range.

With that list, we can give you a fixed written quote after one call. You can request a custom website quote on our service page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do website quotes vary so much?

Each agency prices a different scope. One may count pages while another counts unique layouts, and one may include copywriting, SEO and migration while another leaves them out. Compare quotes line by line against the same written list of pages and features.

Is a website builder cheaper than a custom site?

At the start, yes. Squarespace plans cost $19 to $99 a month on annual billing, and you do the work yourself. A custom site costs more up front but can be built around your services, your integrations and the searches you need to win.

How long does a custom website take?

Our Marketing Sites launch in 2 to 3 weeks and Growth Sites in 4 to 6 weeks. Larger builds are scoped per project. Clutch reports that most projects in its data last about 7 months, a figure that includes large builds.

Do I own my website when it is finished?

You should. Every site we build comes with code you own. Whoever you hire, make sure the domain and hosting accounts are in your name before launch.
