How to verify a locksmith business on Google Business Profile

By · Updated

Short answer

Locksmiths get some of the strictest review on Google Business Profile, because fake locksmith listings have been a problem on Google Maps for years. Expect video verification that shows where you operate, your branded vehicle and key cutting equipment, and proof you run the business. If your state licenses locksmiths, have that license ready.

What Google checks before it verifies a locksmith business

Locksmith is the category Google has fought fake listings in the longest. The classic pattern is a call center that lists dozens of made-up addresses and dispatches whoever is free. Google Ads requires advanced verification before locksmiths can advertise, and Business Profile reviews the category with less tolerance than most. Locksmiths were also among the most affected in the April and May 2026 suspension waves.

  • You serve customers in person

Google only lists businesses that make in-person contact with customers during their stated hours. A mobile locksmith is a service-area business; a shop where customers walk in is a storefront or hybrid business.

  • One real location per profile

Only one profile per location, at the place you actually operate. Virtual offices, PO boxes and unstaffed coworking desks are not eligible. Showing an address means permanent signage there and staff during stated hours.

  • Your real-world business name

The name must match your van, invoices, license and registration. "24/7 Emergency Locksmith" style names, or a city added to the name, break Google's naming rules.

  • A phone number you control

A number that rings your business directly. Dispatch and lead-generation numbers that route calls to other locksmiths are exactly what Google is trying to filter out.

  • Proof on video

Google decides which verification methods a profile gets, and they cannot be changed. For locksmiths it is usually a video recording, sometimes a live video call.

  • A license where your state requires one

Several states license locksmiths. When you appeal, a valid license that matches the profile name is among the strongest evidence you can send.

The verification video, shot by shot

Google's video rules require three things on camera: where you operate, proof the business exists, and proof that you manage it. Plan the shots before you press record, because the recording has to be done in one take.

1

Where you operate

  • Street signs, building numbers or landmarks near your base address
  • If you have a shop, the storefront and its permanent signage with the business name
  • If you work from home, signs and landmarks in your immediate neighborhood (Google allows this)
2

Proof the business exists

  • Your van with the business name clearly visible
  • Key cutting machine, key blanks, pick and tension tools, lock stock
  • Business cards, branded uniforms or a branded invoice
3

Proof you manage it

  • Unlocking your branded van or shop on camera
  • Cutting a key or rekeying a cylinder on camera
  • Your locksmith license, a permit or a business invoice showing the profile name

Google's recording rules

  • One live, unedited recording with no breaks, at least 30 seconds long
  • Recorded and uploaded from your phone through your Business Profile, not filmed earlier
  • No bank, tax or ID numbers, no private information, and no other people's faces

Documents to prepare

Google does not always ask for documents to verify. You will need them if it asks for more information, and for any appeal later. Every document should show the same name and address as the profile.

  • State locksmith license, where required

Several states license locksmith companies, including California (Bureau of Security and Investigative Services) and Texas (Department of Public Safety, Private Security Program).

  • State business registration

Articles of organization, or a fictitious business name (DBA) filing, with the exact name on your profile.

  • Utility bill or bank statement

Electricity, phone, water or internet bill for the business, with the same name and address. Google lists utility bills as appeal evidence.

  • Business license or tax certificate

A city or county business license, or a state seller's permit if you sell locks and hardware.

  • Proof of insurance

A general liability certificate in the business name. Google does not ask for it directly, but it helps show the business is real when a case is escalated.

  • Your own photos

Van, shop, signage and tools. Stock photos weaken a case.

What can go wrong, and how to avoid it

  • The video is rejected

Google's own examples: business name not visible, no nearby area shown, no proof that you run the business. Record again and include everything from the first video plus what was missing.

  • The address looks like a lead-gen location

Mailbox stores, virtual offices and addresses shared with other locksmiths are what fake listings use, so Google rejects them quickly. Use your real base, or hide the address and list a service area.

  • Keywords in the business name

"Emergency", "24/7", "Cheap" or a city name added to the registered name breaks Google's naming rules and invites a suspension.

  • Several profiles for one business

One profile per real location. Extra profiles at nearby addresses to cover more of the map get every listing suspended, not just the extras.

  • Suspended days after going live

Common for locksmiths. Changing the name, address or category right after verification can trigger a new review. Leave those fields alone for the first weeks unless something is wrong.

  • No verification option appears

Google picks the methods and you cannot change them. Try every option shown first; if none work, contact Google Business Profile support.

Locksmith verification: frequently asked questions

Why are locksmiths treated differently on Google Business Profile?

Because the category has a long record of fake listings run by call centers. Google reviews locksmith profiles more closely, and Google Ads requires advanced verification before a locksmith can advertise. A real business with matching documents still gets verified; it just has less room for mistakes.

Do locksmiths need video verification on Google?

Usually. Google picks the verification method for each profile and you cannot change it. For locksmiths it is most often a video recording, sometimes a live video call.

Can a mobile locksmith get a Google Business Profile?

Yes. A mobile locksmith is a service-area business. Hide the address, set a service area of no more than about 2 hours of driving, and record landmarks near where you are based along with your van and tools.

How long does locksmith verification take?

Google reviews a verification video in up to 5 business days. If the video is rejected, a new one starts another review. With setup, a possible re-record and monitoring after launch, our restricted-industry package takes 3 to 6 weeks.

Do I need a locksmith license to verify?

Google does not ask for a license to verify by video. But in states that license locksmiths, an unlicensed profile is hard to defend in an appeal, and the license is one of the best documents you can send.

How much does it cost to have JCerme verify a locksmith profile?

$1,000 one time if you or someone on your team can be at the business location for the video step, or $1,500 if you cannot and our team manages the whole process. Both include full profile optimization and take 3 to 6 weeks.

Verified, then suspended?

Restricted categories are suspended more often than any other. Our appeal service diagnoses the cause, fixes the profile, builds the evidence pack and escalates when the first appeal fails. Free case review before you pay.
